Well...

Well, it seems that I've fallen off of the blog wagon.  Still alive, still making art.  I am trying to evaluate the purpose of this little spot in cyberspace, so have been hesitant to post recently.  I also am uncomfortable with self promotion, which seems to really be the whole point of an art blog.  Alas.

I have been able to participate in some fun things here in Northampton, MA, from a house art show a few months ago, to a sketchbook project which closed yesterday.  A few of my pieces are currently on view at Mango Mango, Amherst.

In terms of the actual work that I've been doing, I've been shifting away from my circle stuff and exploring some other things.  I believe that there is still work to be done in that vein, but I don't want to tie myself down to a single schtick.  It feels more like production than creation.

I have recently begun to meld my interest in textiles with my art, and have been trying to translate some of my visual aesthetic and thematic interests into works with fabric and thread.  I am trying to take better photographs of my work so far so that I can share it on this space.

Thanks everyone for occasionally checking in with me!  Enjoy your summer.

bARTer

Things have been plugging along here.  While I am continuing to work on my circle series and wrap up my latest large oil painting, I've been speaking with a local musician about doing some album art.  I have never done commissioned work before, and am interested in creating something that is both true to my personal vision but also congruent with the band's musical style.

Instead of cash, as much as I adore the stuff, I am going to receive guitar lessons and an "indefinitely borrowed" guitar in exchange for doing some album art, and maybe posters later on.  Although money is tight for me right now, I'm intrigued by the arrangement as it will also give me some exposure in addition to being just plain fun.  I have starting drawing up a couple of little things, and will see if including the style of my circle series is something of interest for the band.

Gummy caves

Last week while disposing of some old gum i became fascinated with the way that it created long stalactite-like strings when it became stretched across space.  Since then, I've been exploring ways to draw it in an equally interesting way.  My first thoughts were of a small graphite drawing with high contrast that drew you into the space, but for some reason I was not satisfied.  Now I'm blowing it up to stretch across 14"x17" Bristol board to give a thicker, gummier feel to it.  I think that I'd like to try it on toned paper in white and black charcoal pencil.  I like the idea that I'm working with, I just am struggling slightly to get it right.
